Subroto Das was born into a family of traditional Bengali goldsmiths from Kolkata. In 1980 after failing class eight he left home for Mumbai. It was here that he began to seriously study jewellery design from his guru Haradhan Parui (his sister's husband) a highly skilled & well-established jewellery maker. Subroto spent eleven years in Mumbai mastering the intricacies of jewellery crafting & design. His next destination was Soni Bazar, Manek Chowk Ahmedabad, the Traditional Jewellery market, where he approached well established Bengali Jewellers. At the time the concept of a jewellery designer was a novelty and he found himself an open work field in which he excelled. In 1991 reputed jewellery stores discovered this talented young designer. In 1994 Abdulla Mohamed Zaman, Jewelers commissioned Subroto to work with them in Kuwait. In 2001 he joined the NIJD (National Institute of Jewellery Design) faculty to teach jewellery design to its first batch of 20 students. He was a visiting faculty at NIFT, Gandhinagar (National Institute of Fashion Technology) where he taught jewellery design & manufacturing. Subroto has designed jewellery for Forever Diamonds Ahmedabad. At present Subroto designs for Mr Jeetendra Kantibhai Mandalia a reputed jeweller in Ahmedabad. Mr Jeetendra has been a great source of encouragement & support to him. Computerised Jewellery design will play a major role in the future of jewellery manufacturing. Subroto is a CAD Jewellery designer specialising in Rhino & Matrix. In 2010 Subroto published his first volume featuring designs for Antique Indian Kundan Jewellery. This is his second volume in which he presents a breathtakingly beautiful collection of Indo Western & Traditional Indian Diamond Jewellery set in both white and yellow gold.
