December borns are considered lucky in every aspect as December is full of festivals, holidays, get-togethers and bonding. Even when you consider gemstone-wise, December people are lucky to have 3 choices – Blue Topaz, Blue Turquoise and Blue Tanzanite. Since blue is the December colour, the December-born also has the choice of traditional gemstones like Blue Zircon and Lapis Lazuli.

Here is some interesting and useful information on each December birthstone:

  • Blue Topaz:

Topaz is one of the important gemstones due to its hardness. It ranks 8 on MoH scale and has a very high refractive index which is used to measure the angle of light entering the gemstone. Topaz comes in different colours like yellow, orange, red, pink, brown, and clear as well. However, the blue and pale blue coloured Topaz is done by irradiation.

The lovely blue topaz gemstones are produced by exposing a clear topaz to electrons from a linear accelerator or to neutrons from a nuclear reactor. The Topaz jewellery is found in various sizes from M to XXL and that too at affordable rates. Blue Topaz has various shades available from pale sky-blue to deeper Swiss Blue and London Blue as well.

  • Turquoise

Turquoise is another gemstone that has been popular for more than 1000 years. The mines of this gemstone worked out in 2000 BC in Sinai, Egypt. The Turquoise was first sent to Europe via Turkey and thus, it got the name “Turkish” in French. The sky-blue color has always fascinated gem lovers. But due to its relative softness, scaling 5 to 6 on MoH and its porous character, it is required to be handled carefully.

  • Tanzanite

Tanzanite before 2002 was not that popular. However, in 2002 the American Gem Trade Association declared it as December stone and it immediately became popular with December born people. Though now it is a popular stone, it was discovered in 1967. The only known source of this stone is Tanzania.

  • Blue Zircon

Blue Zircon has brilliance and intensive fire in itself due to high refractive index and strong dispersion. And this dispersion occurs when white light is separated into colour according to wavelength. The lustre of this gemstone is brilliant. Although Zircon ranks 6.5 to 7.5 on MoH scale, it could be a bit brittle and also it could be sensitive to knocks and hard pressure. The gem has the tendency to wear along facet edges which is why it is used in Rings for occasional or once in a while in earrings.

The original colour of Zircon is brown or red or orange-red. The blue colour of Zircon gemstone can be achieved with the help of heat treatment. However, there are only some Zircon gems with the right physical structure to turn blue when heated. And that is the reason why most blue zircon comes from Cambodia.

  • Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli, unlike other December stones, is not clear. It is opaque and has been used to make jewelry for more than thousands of years. Its name has Latin Arabic combination where “Lapis” is Latin word which means Stone and “Azul” is Arabic word which means Blue. The fines of Lapis Lazuli have been mined for more than 6000 years in the Badakhshan Province of Northern Afghanistan.

The unique gemstone with deep blue colour always has been a popular attraction among jewelry fond people. It is an all-time classic stone perfect for rings and bracelets. It ranks 5 to 6 on MoH scale and is fairly soft and sensitive to hard pressure. It could also be sensitive to extreme temperature and household chemicals too, thus it could be worn rarely on special occasions.
